@hchavers I wish mine was laminate on plywood. It’s ceramic bathroom wall tile over planks. In a year or two, I might just get all that tile torn out and replaced with laminate over plywood, not [long string of expletives redacted] particle “board”.
@hchavers@werehatrack Yes particle board is such a swelling pain. Some years ago I had to replace a ton of baseboard when I had to take out rusty baseboard heating. So what I did is buy a piece of that baseboard that was particle board, used outdoor house primer, painted my test piece on all sides with outdoor house paint (did two coats). I was especially concerned about what would happen to it in the kitchen when I washed the floor or spilled something) so then I let it sit in a full bathtub over night. It passed. So I used that for the replacement baseboard.

This morning I took the trash and got the replacement AC starter capacitor from the mailbox. Went through the garage to install it, fired up, stood up from being bent over condenser and… Eye level with 6-8 cats packed in that bay window.
Is covered with an assortment of produce and cooking projects. Right now that includes cantaloupes, jalapenos, tomatoes, cukes, zucchinis, and watermelons . Figs are in the fridge…
Why does cleaning always make everything messy (I was cleaning the dishwasher. Hence the sink dishes)? Also, I’m more drunken zombie than human and that doesn’t help. Plus, it’s hot and my plants know it.

One push for me to finally make it happen has been the nuttiness in the US.
I’ll probably sell my house soon though because the Southwest’s water situation is going to become critical in the not too distant future. I’d like to cash out before my house loses value.

@catthegreat@kittykat9180@unksol I’ve lived in 6 countries with jobs there. It was interesting and while sometimes I was homesick and purposely went places to find people who spoke English, it really opened my eyes to just how different countries are from each other.
I suck at learning new languages and when I couldn’t think of a word in German I found long lost Dutch words got substituted in. I was told I was speaking german with a dutch accent. In all those countries though except the UK I sounded like a three year old though.
And I never did learn to read Khmer (Cambodian). Khmer sentences look like one word and separating out the words was too hard since they don’t use Latin/Roman? (too lazy to look up which our alphabet letters are called) characters, not to mention they have something like 75 alphabet letters. They have a french transliteration using Latin characters so that was easier but first I had to learn how the french would have pronounced the letters/words. Fortunately for me in the tourist areas there was lots of signs that were in Cambodian and English.
Have fun!!! The other cool thing is that you can go see so many countries easily and quickly using the train. And compared to the USA some countries are small, for example the land mass of the Netherlands is about the same as MD + MA. One day I was on the west coast, rain was predicted so I took the train to the east side, spent the day there sightseeing and took the train back. That night when people asked me what I did for the day they thought I was nuts. But I missed the rain completely.

I have a Spanish tutor right now because I’m in Spain for a month. After that I move to Albania. I’ll probably get a tutor there too.
Spanish isn’t too bad because I already have a base knowledge. Reading Spanish isn’t difficult but people speak faster than I can process. I also find that when I do understand I tend to respond in English.

There are obviously massive differences between living in a major city, living around a major city, living in a minor city, living in a “town”. Living outside of town. Living in south Dakota.
I have no concept of living in a city so please share.
I have a relatively large house (needs some work) in a county with 50K people. Up the road from a town with no stoplight of like 1K. The “city” is 11K 10 minutes away. You know. Kroger and Walmart.
I don’t make 6 figures. I’m probably chronically underpaid for my job because the only way to get them to reset is to quit. Although they might try and fire us for AI…
But an actual Midwest city is 35 minutes. Chicago is a day trip to me… But I remember bitching how much longer when we were an hour closer as a kid and Dad got us in the car at 5AM… Probably 3.5 hours to park. I have no desire to be in Chicago but yea I’d take kids a few times a year to the museums. I can do some driving.
I’ve never lived in a city and I’m very much a. Introvert. But maybe I’d be happier if you were banging on my door to get me to go to something. It’s hard to know.
And the supposed value of this house is 3x what I bought it for in 2013. Per the county. I know it’s not and even if it was… Ok but I have to take that money and buy another house that has also gone up 3x…

@unksol There is a mother in law, and we were shopping with the intent of bringing her closer to us so that setup was intentional. In the end she bought her own house directly behind us, which is a much better arrangement.
The good news is that if your job fires you for AI, chances are after a few months they’d have to hire you back at a higher salary to unfuck all the things the AI failed on. If they are paying attention, by now there’s enough evidence of this pattern that smart companies would skip the firing part.
Last topic, apparently how it’s supposed to work for anyone younger is that they’ve been moved to the PaaS (property-as-a-subscription) plan basically eternally, free of charge. So kind of them to offer it universally.
